Observations ichtyologiques effectuées en 2008 ArchiMer

In 2008, were recorded for the first time Derichthys serpentinus in the Bay of Biscay, Kyphosus sectator in the Pays basque, Liparis montagui in the Charente-Maritime, Boops boops in Normandy. Some juveniles of Dentex dentex were observed in the bassin d'Arcachon in 2007 and 2008. We indicated also the catches of Tetragonurus cuvieri, Callionymus reticulatus, Seriola rivoliana and Brama brama.

This work aims to summarize the work carried out in the framework of surveys in subtidal environment on the French Basque coast in 2017. The course of this campaign is presented as well as the various data collected making it possible to establish a balance sheet. The latter refers to the fact that only one of the three targeted steps could be correctly sampled from a biological and ecological point of view. The analysis of the difficulties encountered during these investigations will make it possible to reframe the implementation of the protocol in order to best meet the objectives originally set during the 2018 sampling program.

Quantification of a rock platform bioerosion by the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) the Basque Coast case (Bay of Biscay) ArchiMer

The French Basque Coast is an actively eroding rocky coast. In the study area it is made of flysch with a circa 40 degrees-dip; it is exposed to an average significant wave height of 1.8 m and peak  period of 9.6 s. It is mesotidal (spring tide of ~4m). The current rocky shore platform is carved into the flysch layering. We focus on sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus contribution to rock shore erosion. Indeed, this sea urchin has a burrowing behaviour. An ecological study has been conducted for stock assessment, from shore to 10 m-deep. It indicates that sea urchins are burying their own shelter and are not reusing former ones. The HaPoGé survey was planned due to a scientific opportunity tender for the HROV Ariane, it follows the test AtlantHrov campaign technique, which took place from May 26 to June 9, 2017. HaPoGé is the first scientific cruise of the HROV Ariane in Atlantic ocean, aboard a coastal vessel the “Côtes de la Manche”. It took place from July 12 to July 19, 2017. Descartes 2 propose la mise au point et l'optimisation de protocoles d'échantillonnage qualifiant les biocénoses marines et des ressources halieutiques d'intérêt régional sur deux types de milieux aquitains : la côte basque rocheuse et le bassin d'Arcachon. Tester et définir des méthodes d'échantillonnage fiables, applicables en routine et transférables, requièrent une phase de recherche impliquant des compétences en mathématiques, hydrodynamique, sciences du vivant. The implementation of European Directives in the last decade (WFD, MSFD, DHFF) shows a growing interest in assessing the environmental status of coastal areas in maintaining the ecosystems functionality and biodiversity conservation. On the Basque coast, rocky shores present remarkable habitats and biogeographic specificities, both in intertidal and subtidal areas. In 2018, the calculation of the DCE indicator "intertidal macroalgae" for FRFC11 water body "Basque coast" allowed to classify it as "Good" for this parameter in spring and “Medium” in autumn. This monitoring is the first data collection campaign in line with an evolution of the indicator and the MSFD needs: double sampling in spring and autumn, consideration of the fauna in quadrats and a taxonomic identification effort. These additional data are presented through the indicator Ics (Community Structure Indicator) but are not scored at this stage. This report describes the results 2020 of the second year monitoring, using intertidal macroalgal data in the transitional water body FRFT07 “Adour aval”. Under the WFD monitoring, the intertidal macroalga parameter of the water body FRFC11 « coast Basque », two stations were sampled in 2015 from the appropriate protocol for this water body. The average of the two stations takes the water body in « Good ». Both stations get very similar results but are not classified in the same category: « Good » . The abundance of opportunistic species is the worst notation. The comparison with results for subtidal macroalgae is consistent. Also, for intertidal macroalgae on Spanich Basque waterbodies results are very similar.

Under the WFD monitoring the “subtidal macroalgae” parameter is calculated for the second time on the Basque coast water body from the protocol used in Britain and adapted to local environmental context. In 2011, three stations were sampled instead of 5 in 2008. The result is the same to the one obtained in 2008 with a quality index "medium" for the whole of the water body. The main criterion penalizing the calculation of the index is "opportunistic species" for each station. There is variability between sites according to the criteria between the two campaigns reflecting the interest of monitoring every three years on the three sites.

Since 2008, the parameter “macroalgae subtidales” is calculated on 3 stations of the water mass FRFC11 Basque coast. In the second cycle of WDF monitoring, complementary metrics are calculated as for the entire Channel / Atlantic facade. These metrics were measured for the second time in 2017 and aim to optimize the information collected to assess the ecological status of water bodies but also to characterize the functionality of the ecosystem. The calculation of the Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR) makes it possible to classify this water mass in “Good” as the previous campaigns with a tendency to improve the rating during the whole period.

In 2014, under the second cycle of WFD monitoring the "subtidal macroalgae" parameter is calculated on 3 stations of the “Basque coast” water body. Complementary metric have been obtained for the first time, as for all the Channel / Atlantic coast. Their aim is to optimize the information collected to assess the ecological status of water bodies. The calculation of the Ecological Quality Ratio (EQR) classify this water body as "Good" as in 2013 with a tendency to improve notation.

In 2013, under the WFD monitoring the "subtidal macroalgae" parameter is calculated on 3 stations of the “Basque coast” water body. The classification for this parameter is "good", and scores obtained are higher than the previous years. This observation is mainly based on the fact that deeper bathymetric levels were sampled and allowed to better characterize belts and associated communities. The effects of bad spring weather conditions on algae growth are not visible at the time of sampling. After these first three sampling campains improvements and additions to the protocol are proposed to provide information for European directives.
